Moving across town with pets is fairly simple but longer distance moves are a little more difficult. Our pets are a part of our family and it’s good to know that it doesn’t need stressful if you’re prepared and know what to expect. Excalibur Moving & Storage offers helpful tips below.
Moving Tips for Pet Owners
1. Plan as far in advance as possible. There are times where this won’t be possible but the more time you give yourself the less stressful the move will be for you and your pets! Pets can easily pick up on our stress levels so try and avoid it.
2. Purchase a strong and roomy crate. If you’ll be using a crate then get your pet used to it well in advance. You can tie the door open and allow them to get used to it. Making the crate a happy place like feeding or sleeping will make it easier for them to adjust.
3. Moving paperwork. Sometimes crossing state lines with animals requires a health certificate and proof that they’ve been vaccinated against rabies. Make sure a friend has copies in case you lose them or your pet!
4. Get your pet microchipped. Have this done at least 2 weeks before your move to allow the chip company to register your pet and give them a call before you leave to make sure they have all the right information.
5. Update ID tags. Make sure the information is current and that there are multiple phone numbers on the tags. This increases the chances you’ll be reunited with your pet if you get separated for any reason.
6. Vet phone numbers. Program the numbers of 24-hour vets along the route you’ll be taking and the number of a vet at your final destination. This will help relieve any stress should your pet get sick along the way.
7. Pack for your pet. Place all items that your pet will need in an easily accessible spot. These items include food, dishes, a favorite toy, etc.
8. Keep a routine. Time changes can be rough on pets. Try and keep your pet in a normal routine that includes exercise, before and after the move. Try and maintain exercise for them.
How Do You Keep Your Pets Calm on Moving Day?
Even with all the prep work most pets will still be stressed out on moving day. To keep them safe it’s a good idea to lock them in an empty room with classical music. If you don’t have an empty room then place them in a bathroom instead. Place a sign on the door to keep them safe and prevent the chances of a mover opening the door and having your pets bolt. Pets can be very unpredictable in a stressful situation. Take the same steps as moving day to keep your pets safe. Once you’re at the new place, put your pets in a secure room until everything has been moved in. Allow your pets to set the pace as they get used to their new home. Be patient and reassuring. Give them the time they need and you’ll both be enjoying your new home before you know it!
