If you are getting ready to move and are a book lover, you may have already given thought as to how you will move your precious collection. Many people don’t feel they have the capacity to think about individual things that need to be packed up and moved, let alone thought of their book collections. However, when you are packing up your books, they are a little different than other items in your home. Excalibur Moving & Storage is here to share some book packing tips that will help you move your books without them sustaining any damage.
Cut Down Your Collection
There are likely books in your collection that you don’t want or need any longer. Many people don’t realize how many books they have until they move and have to pack them all up. While books aren’t the hardest thing to pack, they are definitely one of the heaviest. When you think about the weight of each page, it doesn’t seem like much. However, when you get several large books in one box, they become increasingly heavy. This is a good time to go through your books and choose the ones that you can’t live without and get rid of the ones you can.
Sort Your Books
This is a great time to sort through your books as well. You can sort your books into series, genres, and what you are going to keep and what you aren’t. If you aren’t going to keep all of your books, this is a good time to decide what you want to do with some of them. You can give them to people you know would enjoy them, or even donate them to the local library or good will.
Gather Proper Book Packing Supplies
If you don’t have the right packing materials to pack up your books, it can become a problem as the boxes you have packed books in simply give way to the weight. Here are some of the supplies you will need to pack up your books.
– Book Boxes: When it comes to packing boxes, look for ones that are ideal for books. They should be made of a heavier duty cardboard, not very big and have no signs of damage due to water or other substances that would leave it weakened. Packing books in smaller boxes will help keep the weight lower.
– Packing Paper: You may need some packing paper to put your prized books that you don’t want to sustain any damage. It can be helpful when moving rare, antique or other valuable books.
– Packing Tape: You will need a durable packing tape to help you keep your boxes enclosed.
– Markers: Make sure you mark and list the books that are located in each box so that you can easily find them when you get to your new place.
