If you are getting ready to move, you certainly have a lot on your plate. It seems like the to-do list is never ending, and life can feel stressful. One thing that sometimes gets overlooked amidst the rest of the things that need to get accomplished is changing your address. This can cause a huge headache if you don’t get it taken care of and you aren’t getting your mail. Excalibur Moving & Storage is here to walk you through the process of changing your address with USPS as well as talk about when you should be doing it.
Change Your Address Before Moving Day
When it comes to changing your address with the USPS, it’s important to understand that it isn’t something that is going to happen overnight. You need to give it a little time before it kicks into gear. You need to start thinking about this before moving day to make sure you aren’t still getting mail at your old address after you have left. You should really start the ball rolling about 2 weeks before the big day.
How to Change Your Address with USPS
There are two different ways that you can change your address with the USPS. Here is how you complete both of them.
– Online: This is the most convenient way to change your address with USPS. You can go on their website and fill out the change of address form. You will need to give them your email address and a $1 fee via credit or debit cards which is in place to avoid address fraud. You will then get a confirmation email in your inbox saying it has been completed.
– In Person: If you don’t feel comfortable doing it online, you can also fill out the form PS 3575 at your local post office building. You can either fill it out there or take it home and then bring the form back later.
Mail Forwarding is Not Permanent
It is important to note that even when you fill out this form to have your mail sent to another address, it isn’t a permanent fix. You can plan on the USPS to forward your mail to that address for 12 months before they stop. You need to still plan on contacting all the companies that you have subscriptions through or other accounts and notify them of your changed address within that first 12 months. After 12 months have passed, your mail will stop coming to you unless it has your correct address on the envelope.
