For anyone who has moved a time or two in the past, we all know how frustrating it can be to be in a rush to pack everything up, only to find yourself rummaging through sealed boxes a few days later looking for one particular item. It happens to the best of us and you are not alone. Moving cross country is a project that requires patience, organization and a well thought out plan. If this is your first time taking a huge leap such as this, then it’s probably best that you take advice from those who have been down that road before. If you don’t know anyone who has taken a long-distance move, then you’ve come to the right place. We here at Excalibur Moving & Storage just so happen to know the ins and outs of long distance moving and are here to help this major transition in your life go as smoothly and painless as possible. Here are a few tips of what to pack in your essentials bag (the bag you will take with you on your trip) and what items to wait to pack until the last day.
What Do You Need to Pack in an Essentials Moving Box?
These are the items you will want to keep with you and your family and not put on the moving truck.
1: Medications and first aid kit- Keep a travel bag or zip lock bag with all of the daily medications you and your family require, pets too! It’s always wise to keep a first aid kit handy in case of the unexpected, keeping a small flashlight with this first aid kit will save the day if someone scrapes a knee in the dark, or if something needs to be found in your vehicle in the dark!
2: Phones, chargers, extra batteries, tablets and laptops- This one is a given, if you’re going to be in the car or on a plane for an extended period of time, keeping everyone entertained and charged up will help to alleviate boredom and stress!
3: Change of clothes and favorite blankets and pillow– Having at least 2 changes of clothing for each person in your family will keep everyone comfortable and give you a spare pair in the case of an accident or spill. Having a pillow and a blanket for everyone will also help to make them feel more at home when it’s time to take a nap or sleep for the evening.
4: Snacks and water- Snacking helps boredom and will help you to make less stops for food.
5: Pet water and food bowl with food and a toy- Don’t forget Fido! Your pup will enjoy their favorite toy or bone for the trip and will alleviate boredom.
6: Jewelry, Cash, Checkbook, Credit and ATM Cards- It’s best for you to keep anything of value in your vehicle with you. This will ensure you know where they are at all times.
7: Important documents- This includes passports, marriage licenses, birth certificates, social security cards, bank statements, any other legal documents should always stay securely with you.
8: Wet wipes and hand sanitizer- These will help for easy clean ups!
